How To Build A Simple Vegan Skincare Routine For Beginners

I once owned eleven skincare products at the same time and my skin was worse than it is now on four. 🙃

The industry sells complexity because complexity sells more bottles. Your skin barrier is not asking for a seven step routine.

After a lot of expensive experimenting, I’m down to 4 steps. That’s the whole routine, and my skin is better for it.

🧴 1. Choose A Gentle Vegan Cleanser

If your face feels tight and squeaky after washing, your cleanser is too harsh. That squeaky feeling is stripped skin, not clean skin, and it’s the single most common mistake people make.

You want gentle. Look for aloe vera, chamomile or green tea extract. The Korean ones are the gentlest I’ve used and usually the cheapest too.

Tip: wash properly at night, when there’s actually something to remove. In the morning, water alone is plenty for most people.

🧴 2. Hydrate With A Vegan Toner Or Mist

Toner is the step I’d call optional, and I’ll say that even though it’s on my own list.

Old fashioned astringent toners full of alcohol did real damage. Modern hydrating ones, like a rose water spray or an aloe based toner, are basically a light layer of moisture. Nice, not essential.

Apply it to damp skin, not dry. That’s the bit that actually makes a difference, and it took me years to learn.

🧴 3. Apply A Nourishing Vegan Moisturizer

Moisturiser is where your barrier gets repaired, and oily skin needs it just as much as dry skin does. Skipping it because you’re shiny makes the shine worse.

Look for hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil or shea butter. Ceramides too, which do more for a damaged barrier than anything else on the shelf.

Tip: hyaluronic acid needs damp skin to work. On dry skin in a dry room it pulls moisture out of your face instead of into it, which is the opposite of the plan.

🧴 4. Always Use Vegan Sunscreen

If you skip everything else on this page, keep this one.

Sunscreen does more for how your skin ages than every serum ever sold, combined. It is not close. Most skin damage people spend money trying to reverse was caused by not wearing it.

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide mineral sunscreens are the gentlest, especially on sensitive skin. Both are minerals, so both are vegan by default. What to actually check for is beeswax, lanolin and carmine in the rest of the formula.

Every day, including winter, including cloudy days, including working next to a window. UVA goes straight through glass.

The other thing nobody does: you need about two fingers’ worth for your face and neck. Almost everyone applies a quarter of that and gets a quarter of the protection.

🌱 Bonus: Keep It Consistent

Four steps done every day beats ten steps done when you remember. Consistency is the entire game, and it’s the least marketable advice in skincare.

Here’s a quick recap of vegan skincare routine:

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner/Mist
  3. Moisturizer (plus oil if needed)
  4. Sunscreen (morning only)

🧴 Why Vegan Skincare Matters

The ingredients to watch for are beeswax, lanolin, carmine, collagen, squalane from shark liver, and honey. They turn up constantly and none of them are flagged on the front of the bottle.

Worth knowing: cruelty-free and vegan are different claims. Cruelty-free means no animal testing. Vegan means no animal ingredients. A product can be one without the other, the same way wine can be vegetarian but not vegan.

I’d also gently push back on plant based automatically meaning better for your skin. Essential oils are natural and are one of the most common irritants going. Judge the formula, not the marketing. Same scepticism I’d apply to claims about food.

Give any new product a full month before deciding. Skin cells turn over roughly every 28 days, so judging after a week tells you nothing except whether it irritated you.

✅ The Bottom Line

Cleanser, toner if you fancy it, moisturiser, sunscreen. Four things, none of which need to be expensive.

Stick with it for 30 days before you change anything. And wear the sunscreen, which is the one I’d fight you about. 💚

Four products. Not eleven. The sunscreen is the one I would argue with you about.
