I Went Vegan. Here’s What No One Warned Me About

Going vegan changed my life for the better—but I won’t lie, the beginning was messy. If you’re just starting your journey, I want to save you some stress. Here are 7 things I really wish I knew before becoming vegan.

What I Wish I Knew Before Becoming Vegan
1. You Don’t Have to Be Perfect

The biggest myth? That you have to go 100% vegan overnight. Spoiler alert: most of us don’t. I started by swapping out dairy milk, then slowly cut back on meat. Every little step counts. Progress over perfection wins every time.
2. Simple Vegan Meals Are the Best
In the beginning, I tried all the complicated recipes with ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. I wish I had known that simple vegan food is just as satisfying. Think:
- Roasted veggies and grains
- Lentil soup
- Pasta with a good marinara
- Tofu stir fry
These are easy, budget-friendly, and delicious.
3. Beyond Meat Isn’t the Only Option
I was obsessed with finding vegan meat replacements (hello, Beyond Meat). But guess what? Whole food plant-based options like chickpeas, lentils, and tempeh are cheaper, healthier, and just as filling. You don’t need faux meat for every meal.
4. Social Situations Can Be Tricky (At First)

Eating out with friends or going to family dinners used to stress me out. Now, I always check menus ahead of time and offer to bring a dish. Most people are curious, not judgmental.
5. Read Ingredient Labels
This one took me a while. Dairy and eggs hide in everything. Get used to checking labels for sneaky ingredients like whey, casein, and gelatin. It gets easier, promise.
6. You’ll Find Your Favorite Vegan Foods
I used to think going vegan meant giving up all the foods I loved. Now I have a new list of faves:
- Peanut butter banana toast
- Avocado chickpea salad
- Vegan protein pancakes
- Dairy-free chocolate (yep, it exists and it’s GOOD)
Here’s my full vegan food list if you want inspiration.
7. It’s More Than Just Food
Going vegan helped me think about animals, the environment, and even skincare and makeup differently. It opened my eyes to living with intention. If you’re going vegan for weight loss or health, that’s great. But the ripple effect might surprise you.
Final Thoughts
Becoming vegan is a journey—not a destination. You’ll learn, grow, and make mistakes along the way. That’s okay. What matters is showing up, doing your best, and staying curious.
