I’ve learned that dining out in the USA can be either a breeze or a minefield. Menus are often packed with animal-based dishes, and while some places now proudly label vegan options, hidden animal products can still catch you off guard.

If you’re new to plant-based eating or just want to make dining out easier, here are my top tips for ordering with confidence — and avoiding those sneaky pitfalls.
1. Watch Out For Hidden Ingredients

Even dishes that seem completely plant-based—like “vegetable soup”—can sneak in animal-derived ingredients.
Common sneaky culprits include broth made from chicken or beef, mashed potatoes with butter or cream, and salad dressings sweetened with honey.

2. Pick Restaurants That Already Cater To Vegans

Life is much easier when the menu is already vegan-friendly. I’ve had great luck with Thai and Vietnamese restaurants (tofu instead of meat, no fish sauce), Mediterranean spots (falafel, hummus, tabbouleh), and Mexican restaurants (bean tacos, veggie fajitas, guacamole).
