Is Fast Food Vegan? McDonald’s Fries and What You Can Actually Order
Fast food is the single most confusing category for a new vegan, and it’s not your fault. 🍟
The same menu item can be vegan in one country and not vegan in another. Chains quietly change recipes. And the drive-thru is not the place to be reading an allergen PDF on your phone.

So let’s sort it out now, starting with the question I get more than any other.
🍟 Are McDonald’s Fries Vegan?
In the US? No. I’m sorry. I know.
McDonald’s fries are cooked in vegetable oil, which sounds perfect. But the oil blend includes “natural beef flavor,” and that contains milk derivatives, specifically hydrolyzed milk used as a carrier.
So the fries manage to be both non vegan and non vegetarian, which is honestly impressive for a potato.
This has been on the ingredient list since a 2001 lawsuit forced McDonald’s to disclose it, and it hasn’t changed since.
Outside the US, it depends on where you are. McDonald’s fries in the UK, Canada, and several other countries are cooked in plain vegetable oil with no beef flavoring, and most vegans there eat them happily.
One caveat even there: some locations fry other menu items in the same oil, so cross contact is possible. Your country’s McDonald’s allergen page lists the current recipe and it’s the only source worth trusting.
🥔 Are Regular French Fries Vegan?
Usually, yes. A fry is potato, oil, and salt. No animals required.
Three things can change that answer:
- The oil. A few places still fry in beef tallow, which was the traditional method before vegetable oil took over. Rare, but it happens, especially at older diners and some UK chip shops.
- A shared fryer. If the chicken nuggets and the fries swim in the same oil, that’s a cross contact call you get to make for yourself.
- The seasoning. Any special seasoning blend can carry a “natural flavor” that came from meat.
Two questions clear all of it up: “What oil do you fry in?” and “Is the fryer shared?”
Places with a dedicated plain vegetable oil fryer are your safest bet, and staff usually know the answer without having to check.
🍔 What You Can Actually Order, Chain By Chain
Save this part. This is the bit you’ll actually use in the parking lot.
- Chipotle. Easily the winner. Rice, black beans, fajita vegetables, salsa, and guacamole are all vegan. Check that the pinto beans aren’t made with lard, though most locations use vegetable oil now. Yes, the guac costs extra. Pay it.
- Taco Bell. Has an official vegetarian menu, which makes life easy. A bean burrito with no cheese, or a black bean crunchwrap with the cheese and sauce swapped, both work. Their refried beans are vegan.
- Burger King. The Impossible Whopper is vegan once you ask for no mayo and no cheese, since it comes with both as standard. US fries share a fryer, so that’s your call.
- Subway. Plant based patties appear on select menus. A loaded veggie sub with no cheese and a vegan friendly sauce works almost anywhere in the world.
- Starbucks. Oat milk and almond milk are standard at most locations, and a few bakery items are accidentally vegan. Recipes shift, so check per item.
For sit down restaurants rather than drive-thrus, I wrote a whole thing on how to eat vegan at non-vegan restaurants without the stress.
📋 How To Order Without A Bad Surprise
- Check the allergen page before you go. Every major chain publishes one, and it’s the only source that reflects your country’s actual recipe.
- Ask if the fryer is shared. One question, ten seconds, and you’ll know.
- Order simple. The more sauces and seasoning blends piled on, the more places something animal derived can hide.
- When in doubt, go plain. A baked potato, rice, beans, or a side salad are the lowest risk order on any menu.
🏠 Honestly? Just Make The Fries At Home
Unpopular opinion: home fries are better, and you stop having to interrogate anyone.
Most frozen fries in the freezer aisle are just potato and oil, which means they’re vegan by default. Read the bag once, then buy that bag forever.
- An air fryer gets frozen fries crisp in about 15 minutes with almost no oil. The single best purchase I made in my first vegan year.
- A baking sheet and hot oven works too. 425°F, single layer, flip halfway.
- Vegan mayo or a garlic aioli turns a plate of fries into an actual meal. I listed the good brands in my vegan condiments guide.
If you want the full drive-thru craving handled at home, my vegan burrito bowls are basically Chipotle without the queue.
❓ Common Questions
Are McDonald’s Hash Browns Vegan?
In the US, no. They carry the same natural beef flavor as the fries. In the UK and several other countries they are vegan. Always a country by country answer with this chain.
Is The Impossible Whopper Vegan?
The patty is. The sandwich as served is not, because it comes with mayo and sometimes cheese. Ask for it without both and you’re good. The patty is also flame grilled on the same broiler as beef, which is a personal call.
What Fast Food Can Vegans Eat At The Drive-Thru?
Chipotle and Taco Bell are the two most reliable in the US. A bean burrito, a rice and bean bowl, or a loaded veggie sub will get you fed almost anywhere without a single follow up question.
Are Fast Food Apple Pies And Desserts Vegan?
Mostly no. Pastry is usually made with butter or milk, and shakes and soft serve are dairy. The McDonald’s baked apple pie is vegan in the UK but not in every market, which tells you everything about how regional this gets.
