I Switched To Vegan Skincare – Was It Worth It?
I switched to vegan skincare to see if it was really worth it. With so many products and claims out there, it can feel confusing to figure out what actually works.

After testing vegan skincare for over 60 days, I noticed 5 clear changes. Some happened within the first week, while others took a bit longer. If you are thinking about switching to vegan skincare, here is what you can expect.
What Does Vegan Skincare Actually Mean?
Vegan skincare means 0 animal-derived ingredients and no animal testing. That includes things like beeswax, lanolin, collagen, and carmine.
It’s often confused with “cruelty-free,” but they’re not the same. A product can be cruelty-free but still contain animal ingredients. You can learn more from PETA or check guides from Leaping Bunny Program.
1. My Skin Felt Calmer Within 7 Days

This was the first thing I noticed. Less redness, less irritation, especially around my cheeks.
Many vegan products focus on gentle plant-based ingredients like aloe, oat, and squalane. According to Healthline, simpler routines often help reduce irritation.
2. I Had Fewer Breakouts After 2 Weeks

I expected more breakouts at first, but my skin became more balanced. It was not perfect, but definitely improved.
Some traditional products contain heavier ingredients that can clog pores. Switching to lighter plant-based formulas made a noticeable difference.
3. My Routine Became 50% Simpler

Before switching, I was using too many products. Serums, toners, and extras that did not really help.
With vegan skincare, I focused on 3 basics: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. If you are starting, you can keep it just as simple and still see results.
4. Ingredients Started Making More Sense

One thing I did not expect was how much easier it became to understand ingredients.
Plant-based formulas are often simpler and easier to research. Tools like the Environmental Working Group help you quickly check what is inside your products.
5. It Aligned With My Values 100%

After being vegan for 10 years, using skincare without animal ingredients just made more sense in my daily routine. It felt more aligned with how I already live and the choices I make every day.
What Didn’t Work (And You Should Know)
Not everything was perfect. A few products didn’t hydrate enough at first. This is something to keep in mind so you do not give up too quickly.
Some “natural” or vegan products can be too light for dry skin. I had to try 2–3 moisturizers before finding one that worked. If you struggle with dryness, check my post 11 Best Vegan Moisturizers for Dry Skin.
Is Vegan Skincare Actually Better?
Short answer: it depends. But for me, it worked.
There is no guarantee vegan skincare will fix everything. But it often means fewer harsh ingredients, simpler routines, and more mindful choices. Keeping your routine simple can support healthier skin, something Healthline also highlights.

How To Start Without Overthinking It
If you want to try vegan skincare, keep it simple at the beginning. That is what worked best for me when I made the switch.
I started with just 2 to 3 products, a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer, and sunscreen. When I want to keep things easy, I go back to my Lazy Girl’s Vegan Skincare Routine (3 Steps Only) and stick with it for at least 2 weeks before changing anything.
The Bottom Line
Switching to vegan skincare was worth it for me.
It helped simplify my routine, reduce irritation, and feel more aligned with my lifestyle. If you are thinking about trying it, start small and stay consistent.
